How do I change my Password?

Your password should be as difficult to guess as possible and should be changed frequently. Passwords are the first line of defense for a system connected 24hours a day to the internet. Changing it is easy and if your account includes Telnet access, you can do it yourself at any time, day and night, and as often as you wish. Simply logon with your Telnet client and issue the UNIX command passwd. You will be prompted for your current password, your new password then your new password once again (to confirm that you typed it correctly). If you don't have Telnet access or don't wish or feel comfortable enough to logon that way, you can simply request a password change from the System Administrator.

No one but you will know the new password, including the orbhost Administrator, as all passwords are encrypted. You should never give your password with anyone, as it could be used with malicious intents.

When choosing a password, never use anything familiar to yourself or anything that anybody can guess about you, hackers are experts at guessing passwords and although they may not know you personally, they may still find ways to figure out enough about you and make more educated guesses which may allow them to find your password. You should never use words, dates, familiar numbers or anything like that, instead, you should mix non-alphanumerical characters, punctuation and numbers, as well as mix case when using letters.

Here is an example of password that would be suitable: X9-/%#n5

Passwords should be at least 5 characters and as many as 8, more than 8 would not be useful as anything over 8 characters would be ignored by the system.

If you forget your password, chances are the system administrator will not have it on record and will not be able to find out what it is, in that case, the only thing to do is to input a new one and only the system administrator can do this for you. Also, make sure that you change your programs' preferences (Telnet client, FTP client, design programs, ppp settings, etc...) to reflect your new password .
