These are configuration files that pertain to your personal system account on the server. They control the way the prompt behaves, where your e-mail is located and many other things. These files are necessary and unless you are adept at UNIX and you know what you are doing, they should never be removed, as they will not interfere with anything else and will not be listed when issuing the UNIX command ls unless specifying the -a switch to force listing of all files and folders. They can be customized to your likings to alter the behavior of the "shell" you use to issue various commands. There are several "shells" available on the system and you may chose the one you are most comfortable with, some have extra functionalities which can make your work easier. Each of the "shells" use their own
configuration file(s), some only use one and others may use
two, and some of them share the same config files.
