How do I make the "home" directory if it doesn't already exist?

Once logged on, in your main user directory (you are always there when you first logon), use the UNIX command mkdir and add the directory name. In this case it's "home", so the proper command is:

mkdir home

The permissions and ownership should be correct once the directory is created. To be certain of it, you can always double check them with the command ls -l if you wish.

Your ftp client may make it even more simple by creating the directories when you upload your site.

Remember that the directory must be named "home", and must be a subdirectory of your root directory in order for your web site to be accessible by anyone browsing on the Web. Any other directory names will be ignored.

However, you may never need to create this directory, as it should already be there the first time you use your account, thus the informations here are for those who make a mistake and accidently delete it.

If you accidently deleted your home folder and had to re-create it yourself, you should let the system administrator know about this, as there are special access permissions which are not handled with the conventional methods and you may not know how to set them up again properly, or not even know of their existance at all. These extra permission settings are what we call "ACLs" and they allow a very tight control over who has access to the files and folders. A good practice to prevent others from accessing your personal information is to protect with such ACLs and not allow any permissions to the standard unix "other" group, you can see these permissions when listing the contents of a folder with ls -l and the access permissions are on the left of each line, see the permissions and ownership page for more details.
