What's a Search Engine?

Basically, a Search Engine is a site with a big database of web pages (sites) which allow web surfers to find what they want by using a key word, a key phrase, subject or category. Each search Engine is different from the next because each has a different way to match your query or different method to search for the information. Some examples are "Alta-Vista", "Yahoo", "WebCrawler", "InfoSeek" and many more. Some of them, such as Alta-Vista, operate as a "robot" or "spider" which scans the entire web for anything that can be accessed and adds it to their database. These search engines will find your site eventually even if you never submit your URL to them. However, to ensure your site is to be found by "web surfers" on the web, your URL should be submitted to as many Search Engines as possible to maximize exposure. Submissions are usually free and normally a simple procedure. Search Engines like "InfoSeek" allow you to add your URL yourself on their main page. Some may require an e-mail. A quick description of your site's purpose and contents increases the chance it will be pulled out when a search is made.
