Uploading your site requires the use of a FTP client program. This may be built into your HTML design software, but if not, there are a number of FTP programs available for different types of platforms. Whether the FTP is built in or separate, you must set it up so that it uses web.orbhost.net as the host name, and your orbhost account name and password. After connection to the orbhost server with your FTP program, you will select the files from your computer to be transferred and the location they should be transferred to. Selection of where to transfer to is important in order to be sure your web page will be accessible to others on the web. Your site root document can be called index.html, Index.html, welcome.html, Welcome.html, home.html or Home.html. Regardless of which name you use, this initial web page file must be located in the home directory in your account. When building your site and naming the files and directories, keep in mind that case is important. That is, Home is not the same as home and will not be recognized. If you get in the habit of using all lowercase names, you will save yourself some possible problems in the future. It is also a good idea to consider having a separate directory, such as one named images, as a subdirectory to the "home" directory, to store the images for your site. This will make it easier to manage and re-use the images throughout your site. If you have a cgi-bin enabled account, the cgi-bin directory should also be located as a sub-directory of the home directory. Example: User bob's account
You can store files temporarily in your root directory or any other subdirectory except the "home" directory. Anything in that "home" directory and it's subdirectories is reachable by the web server to be sent out to web surfers, and anything else outside of the "home" directory (and it's sub-directories) will never be shown on the web. Keep in mind that temporary files in your directories will take up a portion of your alloted space on the web server, decreasing the space available to you for your website. If you have a cgi-bin enabled account, the cgi-bin directory will be also located in the home directory.
