Web Design tools & Tips
There are several methods for designing web
pages, it all depends on your knowledge of HTML
among other things. If you are a beginner and don't know
HTML at all,
you'll be better off using visual (WYSIWYG)
web design software. If you know HTML, you may prefer using
editors specialized for that purpose because of the better
control over the script, but you might still need the visual
editors just to save time.
For the ones using visual design software, we
have covered the basic FTP
upload settings needed for the following commercial
software:
Claris Home Page
Adobe PageMill (and SiteMill)
You can find information about Microsoft
Front Page on the microsoft
web site.
As soon as we test a version of Trellix and
get screen shots of the settings panels, this page will be
updated to include it, however, the settings should be very
simple and the same or similar.
For the ones who use design software that
don't have a built-in FTP
uploader or just use some kind of text editor to type in
their html (Yikes! you have our simpathy), it is still
possible to simply do the job by using a standard FTP
Client program, most operating
systems out there now come with some kind of basic
FTP client.
The fortunate people (the smart ones) who are using a
MacIntosh can use Fetch for example, it is one of the
easiest to use and it makes it very simple and a snap, it
even handles deleting no longer needed files on the server
and a few other things.
The settings for any stand alone FTP
Client are the same as any built-in uploader:
- The address of the Host (server address) is:
web.orbhost.net
- Your account ID
(user name)
- Your
password
- The destination directory is:
home
For the ones who don't want to spend any money
on web design software, visual or otherwise, there are
freebee possibilities such as Netscape
Navigator Gold or Netscape Communicator.
The settings for publishing your pages to your
account on the orbhost server will be slightly different for
the destination location only, the other settings such as
User ID (account name)
and password remain the
same, the location setting for the destination should be set
to:
ftp://ftp.orbhost.net/./home
and the filename of the page should be added
at the end. For example if the page you are publishing is
called index.html then
the complete URL of the exact destination location will be:
ftp://ftp.orbhost.net/./home/index.html
These programs do not let you specify a
separate directory to put your pictures in and they will not
handle a whole site, so you have to do it one page at a time
and all the pictures will end up in the same location along
with the HTML
page.
